Herbs

There are dozens of different species and varieties of herbs that can be grown, but a few are particularly easy to grow in Iowa. These include: Basil, Cilantro, Dill, Parsley, Mint, Chives, Thyme, and Oregano.

Herbs are annuals, biennials and perennials that die back to the ground each year and are used for their flavor, fragrance and medicinal properties.

Selection tips

Leaves should look plump, tender, and shiny with a uniform color.

Storage tips

Storing fresh herbs: Wrap or roll the herbs in damp paper towels so that you cover the entire herb, then store them in a ziploc bag in the fridge.

Storing dried herbs: Store in airtight containers - Glass keeps aromas in. Herbs must be completely dry or they mold. Store in a cool, dry, dark area, away from light and heat.
