Choose Iowa Brand
Foods must meet or exceed minimum criteria to proudly wear the Choose Iowa logo on their package or label. Producers must also be members of the Choose Iowa program to use the logo on their packaging. Learn more about membership with Choose Iowa on our membership page.
Brand Usage Criteria
- Foods must meet or exceed the following minimum criteria to wear the Choose Iowa logo on their package or label:
- Fresh produce and commodities that the logo is applied to must be 100 percent grown or raised in Iowa.
- Meat and meat products must be derived from animals born, raised and finished in Iowa. Slaughter and processing must take place in a state- or federally inspected plant located in the state of Iowa.
- Dairy products must be from animals in Iowa and processing must take place in a state-inspected plant located in the state of Iowa.
- Eggs must be from animals in Iowa.
- Apicultural products produced by honeybees, including honey, wax, pollen and propolis bearing the Choose Iowa logo must be 100 percent of Iowa origin. Honey products must utilize honey that is 100 percent of Iowa origin.
- Beer or cider bearing the Choose Iowa logo must be produced in Iowa and contain at least one Iowa agricultural product, such as Iowa malt, hops, apples, corn, or soluble remnant, excluding water.
- Wine must contain a minimum of 75 percent Iowa grapes.
- Spirits must be distilled in Iowa and contain at least one Iowa agricultural product, excluding water.
- Additional criteria to address frequently asked questions about other food items not directly addressed in the Administrative Rules:
- Baked goods must include at least one ingredient from Iowa that originates as an Iowa agricultural product such as eggs, butter, milk, cream, or grains, excluding water.
- Dehydrated or freeze-dried foods must contain at least one Iowa agricultural product.
- Dry mixes such as soups, seasonings, or flavorings must include at least one ingredient from Iowa that originates as an Iowa agricultural product.
- Juices, non-alcoholic beverages or drink concentrates must contain a minimum of 75 percent Iowa agricultural products as the main ingredient, excluding water.
- Canned food goods must include at least one ingredient from Iowa that originates as an Iowa agricultural product, excluding water.
- For canned goods consisting of a primary ingredient such as canned pears or pickled beets, the primary ingredient must be 100 percent from Iowa.
- For canned goods such as salsas or hot sauces the food product must have at least one ingredient from Iowa which originates as an Iowa agricultural product such as tomatoes or onions, excluding water.
