Organic Greens: 2023-2024 Value-Added Grant Recipients

Organic Greens
James Nisly

Organic Greens, LLC was founded by James Nisly near Iowa City in 1998. What started as an indoor micro-greens enterprise has grown to include a field crop operation producing several kinds of vegetables, a food hub enterprise, and a light vegetable processing enterprise. Organic Greens markets its products to local consumers, wholesalers in local metro areas and institutions such as K-12 schools, colleges, universities and early childcare centers. The food hub business also offers products from other local Iowa producers.

Organic Greens’ Choose Iowa grant project will expand cold storage capacity and enhance its fruit and vegetable processing. The business will purchase a walk-in refrigerator and a walk-in freezer, which will provide storage space needed for processing fruits and vegetables and allow Organic Greens to expand its food hub products to include milk and frozen meats. Ultimately, this will expand Organic Green’s market to more individual, wholesale and institutional customers.

Organic Greens expects to increase sales in the food hub business and light vegetable processing enterprise. This project will enable Organic Greens to continue serving the local community and producing high quality, healthy fruits and vegetables for all of Iowa.

Organic Greens has begun construction on the space for their new walk-in refrigerator and freezer.
